The options that are available for upholstery are fabric, rexine and vegan leather. Let us compare the 3 with real leather:

Leather Vs Fabric

Both are natural materials, so they breathe and are all weather friendly. Neither will feel too hot or too cold, no matter what the weather. The synthetic content in the fabric will play a role in determining the comfort level. For eg: Polyester fabric will never feel as comfortable as cotton. Real leather on the other hand will feel comfortable, no matter what the finish is.

Leather is a highly durable material and will outlive fabric any day.
Leather is hypoallergenic and doesn’t gather dust. Great choice over fabric for people with dust allergies.

Leather is a breeze to maintain and won’t get dirty like fabric. Most leathers are easy to clean making it a good choice for households with kids or pets.

For people who like to entertain in style, leather comes with an oomph factor making it an impressive choice that is also forgiving of accidental spills.

Leather is a very strong material and quite indestructible compared to fabric. This attribute is especially important if you’re in the hospitality business or high traffic areas.

Leather Vs. Rexine

Rexine has multiple names - Faux leather, art leather, eco leather, imitation leather, PVC, PU leather, Leatherette and so on. Real leather has only one name, and doesn’t need to attach itself to another material to feel good.

Rexine is cheap, leather is not.
Rexine is essentially plastic and extremely bad for the environment. Leather is a natural material and is a bi product, making it an eco friendly choice.

Rexine will start developing cracks and peeling without any warning after a year or 2. Leather will last you a lifetime.
Being plastic, rexine will feel hot, sweaty and uncomfortable. It may look like leather from a distance, but you won’t be fooled for too long, as it is bound to become your least favorite seat in no time.

Leather Vs Vegan ‘stuff’

Technically we can’t attach the word ‘leather’ to anything synthetic and there is a lot of uproar in the leather world with a lawsuit being filed. So we’ll stick to the word ‘stuff’ until that is resolved.

Materials made out of fruit, vegetables or fungi can never be able to be strong like leather unless there are synthetic additives mixed to it. That is common sense. So to keep the comparison fair, vegan ‘stuff’ is flavored plastic. Leather on the other hand is a natural material..

Leather is a bi product while vegan ‘stuff’ is not. Bi products are good for the environment as it brings utility to waste. Waste is generated in every industry, including the meat industry. If there is any anger, it should be targeted at the meat industry and not the ones that are cleaning up the trash.

Vegans come with a good intent of being kind to the planet. Manufacturers of Vegan ‘stuff’ don’t. They’re just encashing on the Vegan’s sentiments and causing more harm than good. Leather manufacturers come with no hidden intent. They’re only running a business and giving utility to the ‘trash’ from another industry.
